This is an example of a welcome video for students to get to know me a little more.  I am very informal and try to put students at ease by showing I am human and capable of mistakes like everyone.  Students will open up and develop flexible communication skills when the faculty is approachable and makes an emotional connection with videos like this one.

 

I talk to students about the importance of community and managing their time.  I emphasize the communication aspect and what my availability is for replying to their emails and what Blackboard communication features we will be using

Consider this:

 

Elephants are the world's most community minded animal on the planet, including humans.  They are beings that have emotions very similar to humans such as grief and love, depression and joy, humility and pride. They will remove the tusks from a long dead elephant and bring it into the bush as part of their grieving process… Without thier strong community they would not survive................

 

Like a successful online class, community has to be created, fed and cared for.
