Reflections: Standard Six

Assessing student backgrounds in learning is multifaceted now. Technology is a guiding light towards the learner’s ability to cohort and build supportive relationships for learning. As an instructor, the important part of effective feedback and learning is to be able to relate to his/her students in different modalities of learning. Especially those that are personal and current in student lives.  Technology is one of these overriding methods now, like it or now.

Instructors now are facing more and more technology such as IPad, smart phones, social media and other cutting edge opportunities that are going to make a difference in students learning success. Many faculty leave technology at the door but that is contrary to best practices now.  Students learn differently than even five (5) years ago.  Learning is instantaneous, current and viable in relationship to their lives, almost somnambular, no longer and a skill to plan on in the future. They adapt to it almost without conscious thought.

It is important for faculty to realize this and begin the changing process.  That is why this standard is so important. Learning the skills and proprieties of learning styles from a modern point of view and incorporating those changes into their online classrooms is paramount.

Adjustments, both synchronous and futuristic, are fluid, making each change of student enrollments an entirely new situation. Faculty are faced with changing learning paradigms as technology changes and is replaced by something more sophisticated but yet more pertinent.

I use and encourage technology and survey my students to find out better ways to use it for both of our benefit.

I use them in research, assessments and written assignments.  The learning is more profound and by thinking and doing something more evolved I find the responses are far different and more permanent by following the learning success in those students who take my classes in the future and seeing the results. Some of those artifacts are in this group for your review and evaluation.
