Formative and Summative Assessments

The artifacts below are for both Formative and Summative Assessments. I use both of these assessment types to learn about my students and have them assess their learning skills.  Formative assessments I use to assess learners skills in understanding complex subject specific material.

Summative assessments allow students to demonstrate the opportunity their understanding of acquired knowledge and skills.  I give summative assessments at the first mid and end points of the course. This method provides continuous evaluation of students learning and constant feedback.

Test Options for Formative and Summative Assessments: I am noting the options to emphasize the need to setup both assessment types in such a way as to mitigate cheating and present the assessments in with best practices in mind. Feedback is always included with my assessments and timing the assessments will mitigate cheating.

  • Show test in a new window to help student remain comfortable with navigating back to their class

  • Show test description to student before they begin the test. Keeps student fully prepared to take the test without taking their time limit reading directions

  • Make the link available for students to see it in more than one place

  • Adding an announcement also gives students a notification that a test is ready

  • Allowing 2 attempts to complete the test allows faculty to do less work in the event students are booted out of the test prematurely

  • Force completing forces students to finish the test in one sitting. They cannot save and then come back to the test. This helps mitigate cheating and collaboration

  • There is a set timer of a reasonable time for students (based on their class history and the relevance of the information) to complete the test in a non-stressful environment.

  • The auto-Submit feature which automatically saves and submits students test after the time limit has expired is turned OFF to accommodate students hit disabilities.

  • Feedback is give automatically after students complete the assessment but only their answers and submitted questions along with instructor feedback. This allows for instant feedback without exposing the correct and incorrect answers until all students have completed the assessment

  • The assessment is presented to student’s one question at a time to enable the student to completely focus on the question at hand and not be distracted by others.

  • The assessment DOES NOT prevent backtracking (changing the answer to a question that has already been submitted) in order to help students answer the questions they are confident of and then work on more complex answers.

  • The questions are presented in randomized order (Randomize questions for each test attempt to mitigate cheating)
